...Larry appeared at this special landmark edition of NHRA's season opener, along with Roland Leong and the Restored 1969 'Hawaiian' Dodge Charger funny car. In the photo above, Larry is greeted by 1969 Winternationals funny car champ Clare Sanders. Clare was one of many former drivers on hand, as he appeared with the restored 'Jungle Jim' Nova F/C that he drove to victory at the Winternationals some 41 years ago. Also shown in the 'Golden 50' display was a replica of Roland Leong's dominating 1965 'Hawaiian' top fuel dragster.... The 'Golden 50' race car display was actually more like a 'Golden 90' as historically significant drag racing machinery, and the extended drag racing family associated with them packed fabled Pomona Fairgrounds beyond anyone's previous expectations.

...One of Larry's long-time fans is Californian Kevin Lavelle, who attended the 1969 Winternationals as a 13 year-old fan, and witnessed Larry's incredible crash in the 'Hawaiian' that sent him flying through the traps upside down.

...Thanks are in order for Greg and Kathy Mosley, who sent the beautifully restored 'Hawaiian' westward to it's birthplace amid a mean midwestern snow storm, and to John Troxel, who towed the irreplaceable race car through some seriously wintery road conditions before arriving in California.

50th NHRA Winternationals

<dc:subject>News</dc:subject>

If you're going to be at the NHRA Winternationals this weekend, make sure and stop by and say hello to Larry and Roland Leong as they help the NHRA celebrate 50 years of drag racing history at Pomona Raceway.

This is a landmark moment for the NHRA, as they kick off the 2010 race season, and celebrate 50 years of drag racing at one of their most prestigious events. A large assembly of historic race cars will be displayed, and Larry will be on hand with Roland Leong and the restored 1970 'Hawaiian' funny car throughout the weekend. It's also the 40th anniversary of Larry & Roland's Winternationals victory, which occurred one year after a spectacular crash with the then new 'Hawaiian' flopper. NHRA's web site readers recently voted the 1969 'Hawaiian' crash and subsequent victory at the 1970 race as the number 11 most memorable moment in Winternationals history. Check out all the details of this important event at the 50th Anniversary Winternationals website that NHRA recently put online.

Holiday Special

<dc:subject>News</dc:subject>

We've got a special Holiday sale going on over at the online store. Hayden was on hand to wring out his Nationals winning Cone Chevrolet stock eliminator racer, freshly re-done by the guys at Harold's Hot Rod Shop in Enid Oklahoma.

...Like Larry, he was in on the ground floor during the evolution of the funny car, and was an early adopter of Chevrolet nitro power with a Corvair funny car. He later moved on to race unique AMC Rebel and Javelin floppers. However, it was this Chevrolet stocker that carried Hayden to a NHRA Nationals win in 1962.

...Larry and Hayden wrecked some hot dogs and traded war stories from the old days during the down time. Next time, we may need to find Larry's old Tom Sturm Mercury Comet to see who gets to leave with bragging rights!

Upcoming Appearances

<dc:subject>News</dc:subject>

In the photo above, Larry and fellow funny car alumnus Randy Walls visit at the 2006 California Hot Rod Reunion.

Click here to read the article. Phil gives a pretty thorough account of the Hawaiian's airborne antics at the 69 Winternationals, and points to several highlights of Larry's driving career.

Also part of the post are several rarely seen photographs including the aerodynamic gymnastics seen above, as well as a follow up post that shows the crash sequence as published by the Los Angeles Times.
